HHS Takes Action to Prevent Discrimination and Strengthen Civil Rights
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced it is rescinding prior blanket waivers that allowed discrimination based on religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity in taxpayer-funded programs.
Through the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) and the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), HHS has reestablished its longstanding practice of evaluating religious exemption requests on a case-by-case basis, rather than granting broad waivers as done under the previous administration.
This action restores enforcement of civil rights protections in HHS-funded programs and affirms the Department’s commitment to nondiscrimination and equity for all individuals, especially LGBTQ+ people.
