Benefit Redemption Patterns in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Fiscal Year 2022

This report analyzes how SNAP households redeemed their benefits in FY 2022, examining transaction frequency, benefit exhaustion timing, store types, online purchasing, and the effects of pandemic-related policy changes.

Using national EBT transaction data, SNAP Quality Control data, and retailer classification data, this study examines monthly transaction patterns, how quickly households spend benefits, unspent balances, store usage, and online redemption trends in FY 2022.

The report highlights how Emergency Allotments (EA), Pandemic-EBT (P-EBT), and the Thrifty Food Plan (TFP) benefit increase influenced spending behavior. It also documents the growth of online SNAP redemption and differences in redemption patterns across household size, composition, earnings status, and geography.
