Creating Cool Commute: A Digital Solution for Climate Resilience in Miami

Miami-Dade County, facing increasing extreme heat due to climate change, participated in The Opportunity Project for Cities (TOPC) 2023 sprint to address this challenge.
The collaboration involved the county’s Information Technology Department, the Chief Heat Officer, Transit Alliance, and Google.org technologists. Through resident interviews, the team identified a need for better information sharing about heat-related commuting issues. This led to the development of “Cool Commute,” a digital tool enabling residents to share real-time data on heat-affected commutes, assisting city officials in identifying infrastructure needs and informing climate adaptation strategies.
