How our work with Montana WIC demonstrated the value of a national API standard

A collaboration with Montana WIC demonstrated how a standardized API can modernize services and improve data interoperability.

This article details a partnership between Nava and Montana’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) aimed at addressing challenges in modernizing WIC services.

The project focused on developing an API prototype to integrate new technological tools with existing, often outdated, Management Information Systems (MIS). By implementing a standardized API, the initiative sought to enable digital tools—such as intake applications, participant portals, and communication platforms—to seamlessly communicate with the MIS. This approach aimed to reduce administrative burdens on WIC staff, streamline data management, and make services more accessible for participants. The project demonstrated that adopting a national API standard could promote scalable, reusable technological solutions, fostering innovation and equity across WIC programs nationwide.
