Medicaid And SNAP Advance Equity But Sometimes Have Hidden Racial And Ethnic Barriers
Medicaid and SNAP have reduced racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare access and food security, but some administrative and eligibility policies continue to create inequitable barriers.

This article highlights how work requirements, restrictive immigrant eligibility policies, and inconsistent state Medicaid expansions disproportionately harm Black, Latino, and immigrant communities.
Although Medicaid and SNAP were designed to advance civil rights, administrative hurdles and eligibility restrictions rooted in systemic racism still contribute to disparities. The article recommends reassessing eligibility and benefit policies to further advance racial equity while ensuring that administrative practices do not unintentionally create new barriers​
