Digital IDs are increasingly replacing physical ID cards and can streamline identity verification both online and offline, but they also introduce new risks.

For example, electronic credentials inherently generate data trails which companies might exploit for advertising or hire, or that could be stolen, leading to theft or fraud. Digital ID systems could even be configured to “phone home,” enabling government or private actors to track each time an ID is used—raising serious surveillance and privacy concerns.
