How memory anxiety can influence password security behavior

This article investigates how users' "metamemory"—specifically their anxiety regarding their own memory capabilities—drives insecure password behaviors.

The resource highlights that as users become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of digital credentials required in daily life, many intentionally adopt password reuse and minor modifications as intentional coping mechanisms.

To understand this phenomenon, the authors conducted two empirical survey studies consisting of 50 and 303 participants respectively. The findings reveal that out of all studied metamemory dimensions, it is a user’s perceived memory anxiety and the fear of forgetting credentials—rather than actual memory performance—that primarily influences them to engage in risky security habits.Â
