Rebuilding CDC.gov
This blog describes how the CDC relaunched its website through a “Clean Slate” redesign—streamlining content, improving navigation, refreshing visual design, and adopting a new CMS—to better meet user needs and rebuild trust in public health communication.
Facing an unwieldy site with over 200,000 pages, the CDC chose to tear down and rebuild CDC.gov using human-centered design, narrowing content to what truly matters and restructuring the site around audiences’ needs.
They ran a beta site, conducted user testing with thousands of participants, and prioritized removing outdated or duplicate content while ensuring accessibility, mobile usability, and editorial control. Early results after the relaunch show improved satisfaction among both general users and health professionals, along with stronger clarity, navigation, and message comprehension.
