Living up to our value of inclusion: Why we should use pronouns
This article argues that respecting personal pronouns is a key part of fostering an inclusive work environment.
The USDA essay and other similar inclusive communication guides generally make the following points:
- Shows respect for individual identity. Using a person’s correct pronouns is a sign of basic respect, similar to using their correct name. It affirms their gender identity and validates their individuality.
- Creates a safe and inclusive environment. By normalizing the practice of sharing and using pronouns, organizations create a more welcoming space for everyone, particularly for LGBTQI+ individuals who are often marginalized.
