How APIs can help WIC better meet staff and participants’ needs
Implementing an API standard for WIC Management Information Systems (MIS) would enable seamless integration of digital tools, enhancing service delivery and accessibility for participants and staff.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) serves approximately 6 million women and children, providing essential nutrition assistance and education.
Despite its success, WIC’s modernization efforts have been fragmented, leading to accessibility challenges for participants. For instance, applicants often face burdensome in-person visits for enrollment and recertification, which can deter participation. To address these issues, the adoption of an Application Programming Interface (API) standard is proposed. APIs facilitate communication between disparate systems, allowing agencies to integrate new digital tools without overhauling existing MIS infrastructure. A unified API standard would enable the development and sharing of modular software components—such as online appointment scheduling and remote certification portals—across different state agencies, fostering interoperability and reducing administrative burdens. This approach would empower WIC programs to tailor services to their communities’ specific needs, improve data security, and enhance both participant and staff experiences. Collaborative efforts, like those between Nava and Montana’s WIC program, have demonstrated the potential benefits of such integration, underscoring the need for a nationwide API standard to streamline WIC service delivery.
