Conducted between April and July 2020 in select Kentucky counties, the study tested whether mRelief’s streamlined SNAP application—designed to eliminate unnecessary questions and improve mobile accessibility—could improve application rates.
Participants were randomly assigned to either use mRelief’s simplified application or the standard Kentucky SNAP portal, with results showing a 27 percentage point increase in application rates among those using mRelief’s version. The study highlights how reducing administrative barriers, leveraging digital tools, and providing applicant support can enhance access to food assistance for eligible individuals, particularly for those who might otherwise struggle with complex application processes.
