Direct File, Integrated State Filing, and FileYourStateTaxes 2024 Findings Report

This report evaluates the 2024 FileYourStateTaxes pilot, developed by Code for America in collaboration with Arizona and New York, to enable seamless state tax filing alongside the IRS Direct File program.
The pilot tested a novel approach to data portability, allowing taxpayers to transfer federal return information to state filing systems with minimal effort. Findings showed that 96% of users were satisfied with FileYourStateTaxes, 90% of Direct File users completed their state returns through the system, and 88% of filers finished their state return within 15 minutes. The report highlights the potential for expanding integrated state filing nationwide to simplify tax processes and increase accessibility.
