The Public Design Evidence Review

The Public Design Evidence Review examines how design practices can improve public policies and services across the UK, exploring what good “public design” looks like, how it’s being used, and what enables or inhibits its impact.

Published Year: 2025

Published in mid-2025 by the Cabinet Office & Policy Profession, PDER brings together literature reviews, interviews with design thought leaders, case studies, and internal reflections from UK government teams to map the contemporary landscape of public design.

It defines what “public design” means in a UK context, presents evidence on its outcomes (such as increased effectiveness, innovation, and efficiency), and identifies institutional enablers and barriers—like leadership, capability, funding, and opportunities for iteration and collaboration.
