The Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation at Georgetown University is thrilled to launch a new tool from the State Chief Data Officers (CDO) network, our State Data-Maturity Assessment. This assessment, aimed to be completed by state teams knowledgeable about data policies and practices, intends to offer states a holistic and complete overview of their data maturity level while identifying areas for growth.Â
This tool builds upon past work from the State CDO network, including the framing of the CDO role, which provides a broad framework for states to use while defining their CDO position to create a strong foundation for data-driven government. Now, with our State Data-Maturity Assessment, states will be able to understand the strengths and weaknesses of their data collection and usage, gain a nuanced overview of their current capabilities, and chart a path forward for improvement. Through self-assessment, the tool examines five areas common across all US states — commitment, talent pipeline, data planning, data sharing, and analysis — and allows state teams to rank their maturity in each category.Â
We invite states to participate in this assessment to gain a comprehensive understanding of their successes and shortcomings in their data strategies and enhance their strategic and tactical plans. This tool is not designed to compare or rank states, but instead to offer spaces for improvement to advance strategic and tactical plans in all 50 states.Â
