Lived Experience in Policymaking Guide
This short guide aims to draw out the principles, behaviours and mindsets, that underpin lived experience work.

Developed by Policy Lab, this guide reflects on lessons learned from ten years of facilitating lived experience work, including the Changing Futures program in partnership with the UK’s Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.
It outlines key principles such as active listening, valuing contributions, and creating an inclusive and respectful environment for engagement. The guide also includes practical recommendations for structuring lived experience work, such as compensating participants, allowing flexibility in participation, and fostering relationships beyond formal sessions. It highlights the benefits of integrating lived experience into policymaking to enhance decision-making and ensure policies better address the needs of those directly affected.
