This position is funded through September 30, 2024, with federal stimulus funds. Continuation of the position beyond that date is contingent upon available funding. This federally funded position will provide critical support for the agency to urgently address student learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The UX Lead in the Data Strategy & Analytics division will be responsible for maintaining a user-centric focus throughout product development and creating a positive end user experience for a set of educational data and technology projects across multiple teams and will provide expertise and support to other agency initiatives.
Many school districts have adopted or increased their use of learning technologies and data due to the unprecedented impacts of COVID and rapid shift to remote and blended learning. This presents a unique opportunity to solve educational data and technology challenges at a large scale. TEA is looking to create new and innovative solutions to help districts consolidate their education technology and data platforms to better support Texas’s 5.5 million K-12 students, more than 350,000 teachers, and more than 10,000 public schools.
TEA is seeking an experienced UX Lead to help create solutions that improve data and technology integration and enable teachers, schools, and district leaders to focus on what is most important – their students. The UX Lead will play a critical role in ensuring the successful deployment of technology solutions by maintaining a strong user-centric focus, sharing and systematizing human-centered design principles, and driving alignment with existing work in the field. They will work under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and use strong independent judgement. They will guide and oversee the work of contractors.
The UX and Product Design Lead will report to the Director of Data Strategy & Analytics in the Office of School Programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Product Discovery: Conducts or oversees user research to identify user problems and opportunities for improving existing products and creating new experiences, in collaboration with team, ESC partners, and vendors.
• Prototyping and User Research: Translates or oversee translation of user research into user stories, flows, wireframes, and prototypes and ensures products meet the needs of end users through extensive user testing and continuous improvement, in collaboration with team, ESC partners, and vendors.
• Communication and Teamwork: Socializes design solutions and rationale within the product team and with other key stakeholders, including senior leadership; Collaborates with internal and external teams of product designers, developers, and product managers to bring solutions from concept to market.
• Knowledge Sharing and Leadership: Serves as the go-to expert on human-centered design for all Tech Products initiatives in the Office of School programs, consults on other related TEA initiatives; Develops resources for other teams to leverage related to human-centered design.
 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university
Experience: At least six (6) years of experience in software product development, digital design, UX/UI or a related field with a passion for public education. Experience within education technology preferred.
Substitutions: Education and experience may substitute for one another on a year-for-year basis.
 
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: 
• Share the belief that all Texas students can achieve at high levels and are able to succeed in college, career, or the military.
• Previous experience or strong interest in K-12 public education strongly preferred.
• Direct UX/UI experience, experience leading large-scale projects preferred.
• Experience with modern design productivity, workflow, and research tools (Figma, Jira, Slack, Miro, Monday, Adobe C, Google Analytics, Hotjar, Crazy Egg, etc.).
• Fluency with human-centered and agile software-development processes with a demonstrated ability to establish effective relationships and work collaboratively with individuals in technical roles, including developers and product managers.
• Thorough understanding of how to interpret end user needs and translate them into application and operational requirements, A portfolio of user research, visual design, and usability studies.
• Ability to communicate, collaborate, and educate key stakeholders and leaders.
• Experience learning technology platforms (e.g., learning management systems, student information systems) preferred.
• A desire to self-reflect, give/receive feedback and continuously improve.
